The situation

What has happened

Ella Marchetti, aged 34, joined on Tuesday and has been told she cannot use the gym until her screening and induction are complete. She is booked with you on Friday at 4 pm and Ollie Baxter will observe. Last week a member became dizzy on a treadmill and it turned out his screening was fourteen months old, so the Fitness Manager wants every screening completed, recorded and acted on the same day. Ella has said on the phone that she has asthma and wants to lose weight and get stronger. The cable crossover machine is out of service and the gym is busy after 5 pm.

Your brief. Complete Ella's pre-exercise screening, decide whether a referral is needed and act on it, deliver a gym induction that leaves her confident and safe on the equipment in her program, assess her goals and write a first program with a review date, recording everything in the member and client register.

What to look for

Evidence guide

Observe or role-play the screening. The student must review every stage one question, follow up the asthma response, take stage two measures with consent and make a defensible referral decision. The induction must include equipment adjustment, re-racking and emergency procedures, and the program must be within scope with sets, repetitions, load and progression. The register entry must be complete the same day.

The student's evidence summary lists every record they created or changed in the systems named above, their notes and the tasks they ticked. Verify it against the deliverables and your own assessment tool.
