Session Plan Template
v1.7
Purpose. This template is used by coaches, group fitness instructors, swim teachers and recreation leaders to plan a session with clear objectives, a safe structure, inclusion strategies and a review, and it becomes the record of the session delivered.
1.How to use this template
Complete a plan for every session before it starts, using the program plan for the term as the source of objectives. Adapt the plan to the participants on the day and record what actually happened and what to change in the review section. File the plan with the program record.
2.Objectives and participants
State one to three objectives the participants will achieve, linked to the program plan and the stage of learning. Record the age group, number, ability range and any participant with a medical condition, disability or support need and how the session will include them.
3.Structure
Plan a warm-up, skill or conditioning activities that progress from simple to complex, a game or application phase where relevant and a cool-down. Give each phase a time, the equipment needed, the coaching points and the safety points.
- Warm-up matched to the activity and age
- Activities that build on the previous one
- Coaching points in plain language
- Safety points and supervision positions
- Cool-down and check-in
4.Safety and risk
Identify the hazards of the venue, equipment and activity, the controls and the supervision ratio. Record the location of first aid, the emergency procedure for the venue and any weather or heat rule that applies.
5.Inclusion
Describe how the activities will be modified for participants with different abilities using changes to the space, task, equipment or people, so that every participant is challenged and included.
6.Review
After the session record attendance, what worked, what did not, any incident or concern, participant feedback and what to change next session.
